Steps to make this DIY Valentine Decorations: “Love is in the Air” Sign
Let’s get into the step by step tutorial to make this DIY wooden Valentine’s Day sign.
1. Paint the base of the sign
The first step to make this DIY wooden sign for Valentine’s Day is to paint the base. You can choose any color scheme you like, but to recreate the sign in the photo I used a medium pink and white and alternated colors. You could also use other shades of pink, red, purple, etc.
Paint a single coat and let it dry before determining if you need to do a second coat. If so, once you paint the second coat set aside the sign to dry completely before moving on to the next step. It’s also a good idea to make any touch ups to the base coat that you need before adding the words.
2. Add the words
The next step for this DIY Valentine decorations project is to add the words “Love is in the Air”. You can do this freehand or use a stencil, whatever you are most comfortable with.
Since it will be difficult to make changes once you paint the words on, I recommend outlining the words with pencil first or at least planning out where each of the words will go.
To recreate the sign in the photo, “Love” will be the biggest word and written in cursive to emphasize it. The words “is in the” are printed in a different color, and then “air” is written in a similar text to the word “Love”.
Once again, you can use any colors you like. I chose to use rose gold and red to compliment the pink and white background.
After painting the words, set aside the sign to dry again.
3. Add hearts and final touches
The last step to make this DIY Valentine decorations craft is to add the hearts and final touches. Similar to the words, you can either do this freehand or use stencils for the hearts depending on what you are most comfortable with.
To fill in the space, I added a larger heart towards the bottom and then a group of smaller hearts at the top. Adding in the dashed lines will also add additional interest to the sign.
In addition to adding the hearts at this point, look over the sign to see if there are any other finishing touch ups needed. Then, set aside the sign to dry one last time.
Those are the steps to make this DIY Valentine decorations project: “Love is in the Air” sign
Now your sign is ready to go! You can hang it on a wall, lean it against a wall on a shelf, or put it on your porch or front door outside.
