Fall is such a fun time of year, and it makes for a great time to add some DIY Fall decor to your home! This post is going to give you step by step instructions to create a DIY Fall Wooden Sign.
This sign is freestanding so you can set it on a table, counter, front porch, windowsill, etc. and no nails or extra supplies are needed.
This wooden sign for Fall is simple to create in 6 steps but really adds a seasonal vibe to your home. Whether you are a crafting beginner or long-time crafter this is a fun project to create.
What supplies do you need to make this DIY Fall wooden sign?
If you want to recreate this DIY Fall wooden sign, here are all of the supplies you’ll need:
- Wood framed plaque
- Wood slices
- Paint
- Paint brushes
- Ribbon
- Letter stencils
- Painter’s tape
- Hot glue (or other adhesive)
- Sandpaper
Let’s get into the step by step instructions to make this DIY Fall wooden sign
1. Paint the outside frame
The first step to create this DIY Fall wooden sign is to paint the frame. Using painter’s tape to line the inside edges will help you avoid getting any brown paint on the inside of your sign.
I used a dark brown espresso acrylic paint. Depending on how dark you want the frame to be, apply one-two coats of paint. Then, pull of the painter’s tape and set the wooden sign aside to dry.
2. Paint letters on to the wood slices
The second step to creating this DIY Fall wooden sign is to paint the letters on to your wood slices to spell out the word F-A-L-L.
If you are an avid painter, you can definitely paint these freehand, however I find it easiest to use a mesh stencil so the letters come out great every time.
Attach the mesh stencil to the wood slice and paint over the letter in the chosen color. To recreate the DIY Fall wooden sign in the picture, alternate fall themed colors like red, brown, yellow, and orange so each letter is unique.
Pull the mesh stencil off and set it aside to clean later. If you pull off the stencil and part of the letter is missing a little paint (like the example in the middle picture of the “L” above), take a small paint brush and fill it in as needed.
3. Paint the background of the wood canvas
Once the wooden frame has dried, you can move on to the next step to create this DIY Fall wooden sign. To create the wood sign in the photo, I used a bronze paint for the background to give it some shine and extra dimension.
It can be helpful to line the edges with painter’s tape again. Since the frame has dried, the painter’s tape won’t pull off the brown paint you already applied.
Depending on how opaque you want the background to be, paint one-two coats of bronze paint on the background. Then, pull of the painter’s tape. If you’ve missed any spots, go in with a small paint brush for some touch ups. Finally, leave it to dry again.
4. Sandpaper the edges of the frame
Once your wood canvas is dry, you can move on to the next step to create this DIY Fall wooden sign. This step is optional, but it really helps give the sign a more rustic and authentic look.
Use sandpaper on the brown frame to gently distress the paint. How much or how little you sandpaper the frame is really dependent on what you think looks best. I recommend starting lightly because you can always do more afterwards.
5. Hot glue the wood slices on to the canvas
After your canvas looks how you want it to, the next step is to adhere the wood slices on to the canvas to spell out F-A-L-L. I recommend using hot glue, but you can use whatever adhesive you prefer.
My tip here is to get your letters lined up exactly like you want them to be before gluing them so you can make adjustments as needed. Once it looks great, pick up each one individually and glue it to the canvas.
6. Add some ribbon
The last step to create this DIY Fall wooden sign is to add ribbon to the top for some extra color and texture. I used a 2.5 inch ribbon and tied it in a single knot.
Then, use the hot glue or adhesive to attach the ribbon to the top of the frame.
Now your DIY Fall wooden sign is ready to decorate your home!
This DIY Fall wooden sign is perfect to add some extra seasonal decor to a countertop, table, or windowsill! Use the steps in this post to create your own Fall decor DIY project.
