Now that all of the Christmas and Valentine’s Day decorations are put away, it might feel like time to add a new splash of color to your home. This post is going to walk through a macramé tutorial to make a macramé circle wall hanging with a crisscross design.
Because the design does not have any hanging fringe, this is also good macramé decor to put on a counter or table as well.
What Is Macramé?
Macramé is a textile created through knotting rather than weaving or crocheting. You can create lots of different things out of macramé – wall hangings, jewelry, plant hangers, etc. In this tutorial, we are going to use macramé to create a circular wall hanging design using a few different colors and a metal ring.
This design does not require prior macramé experience!
What supplies do you need to make this macramé circle wall hanging?
Here are all of the supplies you will need to make a macramé circle wall hanging. You should be able to find all of these supplies online or at your favorite craft store.
- Macrame cord in various colors
- Gold metal ring in preferred size
- Scissors
- Hot Glue
Steps to make a crisscross macramé circle wall hanging
1. Cut the macramé cord
The first step to make this macramé wall hanging is to cut the macramé cord. The length you will need depends on the size of the metal hoop that you choose. A good rule of thumb is to cut pieces that are a little longer than double the diameter of the hoop. This design does not have any hanging fringe, but if you want to end with fringe you’ll need to cut the cord a little longer accordingly.
To recreate the design in the photo you will need three different macramé cord colors. You will then cut 8 pieces of each main color and then 4 of your accent color. So for example, I cut 8 pieces of burgandy cord, 8 pieces of orange cord, and 4 pieces of pink cord.
This design would also work well with any other color cord you have on hand. Or alternatively, you can also use the same color for the entire design if preferred as well.
2. Use a Larks Head Knot to attach the first color cord to the ring
You will only need to use two types of macramé knots for this design. The first type of knot we will go over is the Larks Head Knot – a staple you will use a lot when creating macramé projects. It is essentially the way to attach the cord to whatever hoop or rod you are using for your creation.
Cut a piece of macramé cord and fold in half. Then orient the loop behind the ring and pull the cord around the hoop and then slip the cord ends through the loop. Tighten the knot – and you’re good to go!
Then repeat this same process with the rest of the cord in that color, keeping each knot close together.
3. Attach the cord to the opposite side of the ring
Next, you will attach the cord to the opposite side of the ring (the cord should be going diagonally). With each individual piece, orient the cord in front of the ring and fold it under the ring and back down. Fold the end back under the ring and pull that end through the loop that it makes. Tighten the knot and repeat with the rest of the cord in that color.
4. Attach the second color cord to the ring
The next step to make this macramé circle wall hanging is to attach the second color cord to ring. You will use the same process you did with the first color by using a Larks Head Knot.
5. Attach the second color cord to opposite side of ring
Next, you will attach the second color cord to the opposite side of the ring. It will be very similar to the process you used for the first color, with a small extra step to achieve the crisscross pattern in the middle.
Take each grouping of two cords in the second color and pull them under the first color cord first going under the first set of two, then the second set of two, etc.
After pulling those through you will use the same knot as the first color to attach the cords to the other side of the ring.
6. Add the accent color cord
The next step to create this macramé circle wall hanging is to tie two Larks Head Knots in the accent color on either side of your main colors.
To attach to the opposite side of the ring, you will create the same crisscross pattern as the first two colors except doing them one by one instead of in groups of two. These will end up being attached in between your other two colors on the bottom.
7. Cut the extra cord at the bottom
Next, use scissors to cut the excess cord at the bottom of the ring. You can leave about an inch of cord. If you want to leave fringe hanging at the bottom then you can skip this step and step 8.
8. Glue the cord ends underneath
To get rid of the fringe at the bottom, you will use a hot glue gun. First, flip the ring over so the back is facing up. Apply a thin layer of glue on the cord and wrap the ends on to the glue. Apply more glue and repeat as needed until all of the ends have been secured.
