This post is going to outline step by step how to make a football birthday card for husband (or any other football fan in your life).

If you know a football fan who’s birthday is coming up, this football jersey birthday card is the perfect gift. This post is going to outline step by step how to make a football birthday card for husband (or any other football fan in your life).

I recently made this birthday card for my husband’s 25th birthday, and it was a big hit so I wanted to share this DIY birthday card tutorial with you so you can make your own jersey card!

Handmade cards are really special because the recipient will know that you put in a lot of time and effort. Making a card by hand also allows you to personalize the card to the birthday person’s interests and likes.

Supplies needed to make this football birthday card for husband

This football birthday card does not require a ton of expensive craft supplies – it really only requires a few items. To make this DIY birthday card football jersey, you will need these supplies:

  • Colored cardstock
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue gun or other adhesive
  • Ruler (optional)

How can you personalize this football birthday card?

This football jersey is a great birthday card for husband (or any other sports fan in your life), but it can also be customized in several ways based on the recipients likes and interests. When thinking of the recipient, here are a few ways you can personalize the card accordingly:

The number

The first way you can personalize this birthday card is the number on the jersey. The idea is to have the number be the age that the person is turning. So for example, I made this card for my husband’s 25th birthday so I used the number 25 on the card.

The team and sport

Another way you can customize this birthday card to the recipient’s likes is to choose their favorite sport and team to base the jersey off of. For example, my husband is a big Kansas City Chiefs fan – so I modeled the card off of one of their jerseys using their red, yellow, and white team colors.

However, this card could be adapted for any sport jersey for any team using their team colors. I recommend googling a photo of the team’s jersey so you can get a feel for the layout and the colors that you will want to use. These colors will help guide what color cardstock paper to use as well.

Now let’s talk about how to make a football birthday card for husband (or any other sports fan in your life)

1. Fold an 8.5 x 11″ piece of paper

The first step is super simple – fold an 8.5 x 11 inch piece of cardstock in half the “hamburger” way to get a 5.5 x 8.5 inch card. This DIY birthday card is in the shape of a sports jersey and opens with the seam of the card on the shoulders. Because of this, you will want to use a piece of paper in the color you want to be the main part of the jersey.

2. Cut out the jersey

The next step to make this football birthday card for husband is to cut out the shape of the jersey from the piece of paper you just folded.

You can trace out the shape you want to cut out using pencil first or do it freehand. You will want to aim for the body of the jersey to be about 3.25 inches wide and the sleeves to be 1.25 inches wide. If you want the card to be larger, you can start with a larger piece of paper and go from there.

I know it can be easy to get caught up on this part, but don’t worry about it being completely perfect – the card will still look great even if it isn’t perfectly lined up.

3. Cut out the numbers

The next step to make this football DIY birthday card is to cut out the numbers for the card. As noted above, you will want to use the number of the age that person is turning. Additionally, most numbers on sports jerseys are outlined in another color. For example, I was basing my card off of a Kansas City Chiefs jersey so my number are white with a yellow outline.

To create this effect, you will first cut out the numbers in the main color. I recommend drawing your number in pencil before cutting it out to get a more polished looking number. By using pencil, you can erase any lines that remain after cutting it out.

Alternatively, you can draw the numbers backwards so that when you cut them out the pencil lines are on the back side that won’t be seen on the card.

4. Outline the numbers

The next step for this football birthday card for husband is to add the outline to your numbers (if applicable to your design). To do this, use a hot glue gun or chosen adhesive to glue the numbers you cut out in the last step on to a piece of paper in the outline color.

Then, you will cut around the number leaving a thin outline around it in your chosen color.

5. Create accent lines

Next, you will create accent lines for the sleeves. To do this, cut two thin strips of of one color and two slightly thicker strips of your other color. Then you will glue the thinner strips on to the thicker strips to get a striped effect.

You should now have all of the pieces needed for the card so you can move on to the next step to put it together.

6. Glue the numbers and accent lines to the card

The last step for how to make a football birthday card for husband is to glue the number and accent lines on to the card using hot glue or your chosen adhesive. I recommend laying each piece on to the jersey base before gluing it down to make sure you have everything aligned how you want it to be.

Once glued, make any final trims or adjustments if needed and then you are ready to go! Now you can write your birthday message inside the card and add it to your birthday gift.
