Halloween is such a fun time especially for crafting and getting creative. From homemade costumes to DIY Halloween decor, this is a great time to make something special. This post is going to give you step by step instructions to make this Halloween wreath DIY project for spooky vibes.
Wreaths are a fun way to add some Halloween spirit to your door when trick or treaters are coming through. You can definitely find wreaths for Halloween to buy in a store, but making one yourself is fun, less expensive, and allows you to customize it to your own taste.
What supplies do you need to make this Halloween wreath DIY?
Here are all of the supplies that you need to recreate this DIY Halloween wreath:
- Foam ring
- Halloween themed ribbon
- Ghost
- Gray paper
- Markers
- Toothpicks
- Scissors
- Hot glue gun and/or stapler
How to make a DIY Halloween wreath at home…
1. Wrap the foam ring with ribbon
The first step to make this DIY Halloween wreath is to wrap your foam base with ribbon. I chose a plaid ribbon in a Halloween color palette, but you can pick a different ribbon to get a different look. I recommend choosing a wider ribbon because the thinner the ribbon, the more times you will need to wrap it around the base. The specific ribbon I used for example was 2.5 inches wide.
To wrap the ribbon around the ring, staple the end of the ribbon in one spot to hold it on there while you wrap. Then, wrap the ribbon around until the entire ring is covered. Cut the ribbon and staple that end to the foam ring to keep it in place.
Alternatively, if you don’t have a stapler on hand you can also use a hot glue gun to secure the ribbon as well.
2. Create the letters to spell “BOO”
The next step for this Halloween wreath DIY project is to create your letters that will spell out “BOO”. Cut your gray paper into three small shapes to look like gravestones. I decided to give each one somewhat of a unique look so one is more rectangular while another has curves on the top for example.
Once you have cut out the gravestones, use a marker to write the letters B-O-O and to add some detailed lines onto the paper.
3. Use toothpicks to attach the letters to the wreath
After you have created your gravestone letters to spell “BOO”, you will attach them using toothpicks. Flip each letter over and use a hot glue gun to attach a toothpick to each one. You will want about 1-1.5 inches of toothpick extending from the bottom of the letter.
Then, stick the toothpick into the foam wreath towards the bottom right corner of the wreath. You may need to use a little pressure for the toothpick to go through the ribbon into the wreath. Arrange the letters so they are evenly spaced and spell “BOO”.
4. Attach the ghost
The next step to create this Halloween wreath DIY project is to attach the ghost to the wreath. I used a ghost figurine I found at Michael’s that already has a stick attached. However, you can also use a different ghost or make a paper ghost and attach it using a toothpick like you did in the last step with your letters.
Stick the ghost into the bottom left corner of the wreath next to the letters you attached in step 3.
5. Add additional ribbon to the top right
The last step to complete your DIY Halloween wreath is to add some additional ribbon to the top right corner of the wreath to give it some additional dimension.
With the wreath facing up, run a piece of ribbon diagonally across the right and staple it to the foam ring to attach it. Again, if preferred you can also use hot glue to attach the ribbon as well.
Then, flip the wreath over so the back is facing up. Run a second piece of ribbon diagonally so the two pieces will overlap. Attach it using hot glue or staples.
Now your Halloween wreath DIY project is complete!
This DIY Halloween wreath is simple to make and a great way to add some spooky vibes to your home this holiday season. Trick or treaters will love it!
How Can You Hang Up The DIY Halloween Wreath?
There are several ways that you can hang up your DIY Halloween wreath. To attach it to your door or on the wall of your home, I recommend using a command hook or nail to hang the wreath. You can also lean the wreath against a wall on a table or even in your kitchen counter – it just depends where you want to add some extra spooky spirit!
