Tip #1: Keep the size of your Thanksgiving table in mind

The first tip when selecting your wooden centerpiece box is to keep the Thanksgiving table in mind. The shape and size of the table will impact how large you want your centerpiece box to be. For example, a long rectangular table may be best with a long rectangular centerpiece box where as a circular table would look best with a square box.

If your table is large enough, you could even make a couple of smaller centerpiece boxes for your Thanksgiving table decor.

How to make a DIY Thanksgiving centerpiece box for your Thanksgiving table decor

Let’s get into the steps to make this wooden centerpiece box for your Thanksgiving table.

1. Paint the centerpiece box

The first step to make a DIY Thanksgiving centerpiece is to paint your wooden box. Choose a paint color based on your preference and the other items in your Thanksgiving table decor. I selected a dark red and brown to add variety to our orange table cloth and gray plates.

Apply a coat of paint to the entire box, including the inside. After setting it aside to dry, apply a second coat if needed.

You can stop here, or you can use a dry brush painting techniques to achieve the rustic look in the photo. To do this, use a clean and dry paintbrush. Then using the tip of the brush, run a different color paint over the surface of the box. Add paint until you achieve the look you want and set the box aside to dry.

In the photo, we used a red barn base and added chocolate brown using the dry brushing technique.

2. Paint “Thankful” on the box

The next step to make this DIY Thanksgiving centerpiece box is to add the word “Thankful” on to the side. You can also choose any other word that you want – or for a more personalize touch you could add your family’s last name. Regardless of what you want to say, the technique will remain the same.

Take your letter stencils and spell out your desired word. Choose the side of the box you want to add the word to. Use painter’s tape to hold the letter stencils in place. To get the best results, you want the stencils to be as tight to the surface as possible.

Next, paint over the stencil in your desired color. In the photo, we used bronze.

Then remove your stencils while the paint is still wet. Use a small paint brush to make any touch ups as needed. After, set aside the box to dry again.

3. Fill the box with festive items

The last step to make this DIY Thanksgiving centerpiece box is to fill it with festive items. Ideas to fill your box:

  • Candles (Using fake candles can be a good way to avoid a fire hazard)
