One Room Challenge Week 6: DIY Macrame Plant Hanger for Beginners

This post will walk you through the steps to make your own macramé plant hanger that is simple enough even for someone brand new to macramé.

Welcome to week 6 of the One Room Challenge. If you haven’t been following along, you can check out my plan to makeover our apartment balcony here. This week I am tackling a DIY macramé plant hanger.

This post will walk you through the steps to make your own macramé plant hanger that is simple enough even for someone brand new to macramé.

If you are new to macramé, this video tutorial is really helpful to discover different types of basic macramé knot techniques. For this project, you will be using the lark’s head knot to start the project.

Supplies needed to make a DIY macramé planter hanger for beginners

Here are all of the supplies you need to make a hanging macramé planter.

  • Outdoor macramé cord
  • Macramé ring
  • Small potted plant
  • Scissors
  • Measuring tape

Steps to make a DIY macramé plant hanger for beginners

Now that you have the supplies, let’s make a plant hanger with macramé!

1. Cut macramé cord

The first step when making a macramé plant hanger is to cut four equal length pieces of your macramé cord. You can use any color macramé cord that fits your style, but if you are planning to hang your planter outside, then I definitely recommend using a macramé cord specifically designed to be outside so it will be moisture resistant.

How long each piece of cord should be will depend on how long you want your plant hanger to end up and how big your potted plant is. I cut pieces about 5 feet each and the resulting planter ended up being about 2 feet.

2. Attach the macramé cord to the ring

Next, you will attach the macramé cord you just cut to the ring. You will complete four lark’s head knots. Fold a piece of macramé cord in half and orient the resulting loop downwards behind the ring. Then pull the ends of the cord through the loop and tighten it so it’s attached to the ring like in the photo.

Repeat this step with your other three pieces of macramé cord so they are all next to each other on the ring.

3. Knot each group of two

Now that your macramé cord is attached, you will tie four knots about halfway down the cord. Tie each group of two so that you have four knots evenly next to each other. You can tie these in a single or double knot.

4. Tie each left cord to the cord on their right

Now move several inches down from those knots and tie each cord to the cord on their right, leaving the two cords on the outside. Next, tie the two cords on the outside together. This will start to form the net that will hold your potted plant.

5. Repeat step four a few inches below the previous knots

A few inches below the knots you created in the previous step, repeat the four knots tying each cord to the one on its right.

6. Knot the bottom of the cords together

To complete your macramé plant hanger, you will group the cords together at the bottom so that the potted plant can sit inside. I find it easiest to put the pot inside the cord and group them underneath so you can see how far down to complete this step.

Cut a smaller piece of cord you can wrap around the bottom. Use this cord to tie the rest together like shown in the photo. If necessary, trim the ends of the cord so they are even.
