With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, this unique card idea is perfect for the pizza lover in your life. This post is going to walk you through the steps of how to make a circle slider card as a DIY pizza valentine.

What is a circle slider card?

The most fun part of this card is that it’s interactive!

A circle slider card is a card that has a circular piece that slides to reveal a hidden message or image. For this card, the circular element is a pizza that slides to reveal a special message “You have a pizza my heart”.

  • Cardstock (Gray/silver, tan, light yellow, and white)

How to make a circle slider card as a DIY pizza valentine

Now that you have your supplies, let’s go through the steps to make this handmade valentine…

1. Cut the cardstock

The first step is to cut out four circles. You can scale them to however big you want your card to be, but you’ll need two of equal size in tan and silver. You’ll also need a light yellow circle a little smaller than those and a silver one a little larger than those.

For this step you can trace a circle using a protractor or a cup and then cut them out with scissors. Or if you have a Cricut or other die cutting machine you can use that instead.

2. Make the pizza

The next step to make this circle slider card is to create the pizza. First, glue the dark tan circle to the larger silver circle. Then, you’ll glue the light yellow circle on top of that. This creates the cheese base, crust, and silver platter.

Next, using markers you can add your pizza toppings. Whether you’re a veggie lover or fan of pepperoni you can really make this part your own.

3. Cut slits with the x-acto knife

The next step to make this pizza valentine is to use the x-acto knife to cut a couple of slits.

With your remaining silver circle, cut a slit from about the middle all the way through the edge. For the pizza, you’ll cut from about the middle close to the edge but without fully cutting through the edge.

4. Assemble the circle slider

Next, you’ll put the two pieces together. Put the silver circle behind the pizza and pull one of the flaps through the slit you made in the pizza from the last step. The silver circle will be able to slide over the pizza, making it look like the pizza is being eaten.

5. Attach the toothpick

The next step to make this circle slider card is to attach the toothpick which will act as the handle to let you slide the mechanism.

Using the adhesive of your choice, attach the toothpick to the sliver circle as shown in the photo. It will be on the back of the silver circle. Be sure to let it dry completely before testing out the mechanism.

6. Write your secret message

Now that the slider element is created, slide it over using the toothpick to make room for the message. You’ll want to leave some space between the message and the toothpick so it can be hidden when you have it slid the other way.

7. Attach the pizza to your card base

The last step to make this circle slider card is to attach the pizza to your card base. I used a white cardstock for this as a neutral background but you can use any color you think the recipient will like.

Important tip: You’ll want to carefully put a little bit of adhesive in a couple of places on back outer edge of the larger silver circle. This will ensure that the circle mechanism can still move.

Now your pizza valentine is ready to go!

With your card complete, all you have to do is write a heartfelt message inside. The recipient is going to love this unique and interactive DIY valentine.
