How to Make a DIY Spring Wreath with Macramé Fringe

This post is going to give you a in depth tutorial to make a DIY Spring wreath with macramé fringe.

With Spring coming up before we know it, I wanted to get some floral décor ready to go. This post is going to give you a in depth tutorial to make a DIY Spring wreath with macramé fringe. It is the perfect bohemian touch to your Spring décor.

What is macramé?

This DIY wreath for Spring is a great introduction to macramé if you are new to that craft – don’t worry, we’ll go through everything step by step.

Macramé is a textile created through knotting rather than weaving or crocheting. You can create lots of different things out of macramé – wall hangings, jewelry, plant hangers, etc. In this tutorial, we are going to use macramé to create a beautiful wreath for Spring.

Step by step instructions to make this DIY Spring wreath

First let’s go over the types of macramé knots you need to know how to make for this Spring wreath…

If you are brand new to macramé, feel free to watch the intro video below multiple times or in slow motion as you practice and get more comfortable with it. These are all of the knots that I used in my DIY Spring wreath shown in the picture. You can recreate these in the same order and colors or personalize it to your own style and taste.

1. Larks Head Knot

The first type of knot we will go over is the Larks Head Knot – a staple you will use a lot when creating macramé projects. It is essentially the way to attach the cord to whatever hoop or rod you are using for your creation.

Cut a piece of macramé cord and fold in half. Then orient the loop downwards behind the ring and pull the rest of the cord through that loop. Tighten the knot – and you’re good to go!

2. Square knot

The next step in this macramé wreath DIY is the square knot. Once you attach two cords to your hoop using a larks head knot, take the outside left cord over the middle and under the outside right cord.

Pull the outside right cord under the middle through the hole you created. Then, tighten the knot and repeat on the opposite side. Continue until it is as long as you want.

3. Double square knot

To create the white part in the center, you will use a modified version of the square knot – the double square knot.

Tie four larks head knots next to each other on the hoop. Using the two knots on the left, tie a couple of square knots like you did in the last step.

Next, repeat the same thing using the two knots on the right. Then repeat the same steps using the four cords in the middle. Continue alternating between the left 4, right 4, and middle 4 cords until it is as long as you want.

4. Alternating Half Hitch Knot

The last macramé knot that you need for this wreath is an alternating half hitch knot. Take the left cord over the right cord and pull through the loop. Tighten and repeat on the other side and continue alternating each knot until it’s as long as you want.

5. Trim the edges of your cords

After you’re finished with your knots, trim the ends of the cords so that they are mostly even on the bottom.

Once your macramé is complete, it’s time to add the finishing touches to your wreath…

After you add the macramé to your hoop, hot glue your flowers and leaves to complete the wreath. Remove the flowers from the stems and hot glue them to the hoop. For a more eclectic look, spread out the flowers throughout the hoop.

Now your wreath is ready to go!
