With the Christmas season approaching, it’s fun to start thinking about holiday decor. I love having a Christmas tree with a mixture of ornaments including some handmade creations. This post is going to walk you through steps to make your own macrame snowflake ornament to add a DIY touch to your Christmas tree this year.

Supplies to make a macrame snowflake ornaments

Here are all of the supplies you need to make your own macrame snowflake ornaments:

  • Macrame cord
  • Small metal or wood ring
  • Scissors

For the macrame cord, I used 4 mm cord but depending on how thick you want the cord to be feel free to mix it up. Also think about what color you want your snowflakes to be – I made one in classic white and one using a combination of blue and white.

Steps to make a macrame snowflake ornament

Now that you have your supplies, here are the steps to make macrame snowflake ornaments.

1. Cut 20 pieces of macrame cord

The first step to make a macrame snowflake ornament is to cut 20 pieces of macrame cord. Cut pieces about 12 inches long. If you are using two colors, you’ll need 10 pieces of each color.

2. Use a Larks Head knot to attach the macrame cord to the ring

The first type of knot you will use to make macrame snowflake ornaments is the Larks Head Knot. It is essentially how you attach the cord to the ring you are using for this project.

Take one of the pieces of macrame cord and fold it in half. Then orient the loop downwards behind the ring and pull the rest of the cord through that loop. Tighten the knot – and you’re good to go!

Continue the same process with all 20 strands of macrame cord. If you are using multiple colors, alternate the colors as you go. In the end, the cord should go all the way around the ring.

3. Use a Double Square Knot to create the five points of the snowflake

The next step to make these macrame snowflake ornaments is to use double square knots to create the five points of the snowflake.

Isolate four of the larks head knots – there should be eight individual strands. Using the four strands on the left, take the outside left cord over the middle and under the outside right cord.

Pull the outside right cord under the middle through the hole you created. Then, tighten the knot and repeat on the other side. Then, repeat the same process using the four strands on the right.

Finally, repeat once more using the four middle strands. This will create a triangular point to your snowflake.

Repeat this four more times to create five points.

4. Trim the edges

The next step make these macrame snowflake ornaments is to trim the edges of all the cord. This can be a good way to shape your snowflake how you want it to look.

5. Add a way to hang your macrame snowflake ornament

The last step to make these macrame snowflake ornaments is to add a way to hang your ornament on the tree. You can use a piece of macrame cord or some twine.

First, use another larks head knot to attach the cord or twine to the ring in between two of the snowflake points. Then, tie a knot or bow at the top to create a loop however big you want it to be.

And now you have a macrame snowflake ornament!
