Next Stop, Honeymoon: Wedding Greeting Card Design for Newlyweds

This post will give you a step by step tutorial to make this wedding greeting card design.

Got a wedding coming up? Giving the newlyweds a handmade wedding congratulations card will show you care. This post will give you a step by step tutorial to make this wedding greeting card design referencing the couple’s honeymoon destination.

If you know where the couple is taking their honeymoon, adding a reference to it will help give the card an extra personal touch.

Supplies needed to make this wedding greeting card design

Here are all of the supplies you’ll need to make this wedding greeting card design:

  • Patterned paper
  • Black cardstock
  • Yellow cardstock
  • Wedding stickers (Example here)
  • Letter stickers
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue (or other adhesive)

Benefits of making a wedding congratulations card by hand

There are several benefits to making a handmade wedding congratulations card by hand instead of buying one in a store.

  • Personalized – A handmade card opens up lots of different opportunities to personalize the card to the recipients – in this case the newlyweds. For example, if you are recreating this wedding card design, you can reference where the couple plans to take their honeymoon.
  • Thoughtful – No matter what the occasion is, a handmade card shows you care and that you put in time and effort to make the recipients something that they will love.
  • Unique – Making a card instead of buying one guarantees that you will be giving the couple a unique card, made just for them. No risk of another guest picking the same card at a store and giving them the same exact one you chose.
  • Fun – Lastly, it is also a lot of fun to get creative and make your own wedding congratulations card rather than just pulling one off of the shelf at a store.

Steps to make this wedding greeting card design

Let’s get into the step by step tutorial to recreate this wedding congratulations card!

1. Fold the base of your card

The first step to make this honeymoon wedding card design is to fold the base of your card. This can be whatever pattern you want – try to think about what their honeymoon destination is and plan accordingly. For example, this card design in the photo is referencing Hawaii, so I selected a tropical print.

If your patterned paper is extra thin, I recommend folding a piece of cardstock first and gluing the patterned paper on top to ensure that you have a thicker card that will last longer.

2. Make the road

The next step is to make the road on your card. To do this, take a black piece of cardstock paper and cut a strip about 3 inches wide.

Top tip: To give the road the illusion of getting farther away, cut the strip of paper to get slightly thinner on the left hand side of the card.

Once you cut the strip of black paper, I recommend gluing it to the card first then trimming the edges to fit it to the card. Hot glue works really well with card making, however you can use whatever adhesive is your preference.

Then to add a finishing touch to your road, cut a couple of small pieces out of yellow or white cardstock to add dotted lines along the road.

3. Add the wedding getaway card sticker

Once your road is complete, you will add the getaway vehicle to your wedding greeting card design. I personally used this sticker here for the getaway car, but if you want to get extra creative you can also make your own out of paper.

4. Add “Next stop…” to the top of the card

The final steps to creating the outside of this wedding congratulations card is to add the words at the top. First, add the “Next stop…” text. I recommend selecting a smaller letter sticker in a different color than what you will use to spell out the honeymoon destination to give the words some extra contrast.

5. Add the honeymoon destination

Once you have your “Next stop…” text on the card, you will spell out the honeymoon destination in a different size and color text.

Top tip: Sometimes the thicker letter stickers like I used in the “Hawaii” text don’t stick to the page well. Lay out the letters so you know where you want to place them. Then if you notice they are not sticky enough, take your hot glue gun or other glue and add some extra adhesive to the letters before adding them to the card.

Those are the steps to make this wedding congratulations card!

Now your card is ready to go – all you have to do is write a personal message to the couple inside and put it in an envelope.
